DO I BELIEVE IN VALENTINE? Rev. Elekima Ekine

Categories: blog

Another season of love is here again in the name of “Valentine” I have been asked many times if I believe in “Valentine” and my answer has always been I believe in what it is made to represent ‘LOVE’.
But it is not the “free” love or unrestrained sex as is being demonstrated now. https_proxyIn fact, history has it that it was used to celebrate “Friendship” rather than romantic love. Down the years the emphasis is changed to “Romance”.
The history of Valentine’s Day was associated with St. Valentine who sacrificed his life for the sake of love. St. Valentine was a priest who served in the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius- jailed Valentine for defying his decree which outlawed marriage for young men. Therefore it is good to remind ourselves of what true love is all about.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.’
1 Corinthians 13:7 (amp.) “ Love bears up under anything and every thing that comes , is ever ready to believe the best of every person, it’s hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything (without weakening).
1 John 4:8 “……..for God is love.”
The first thing about love is that; it is the embodiment of God. That means, whatever is done under the cover of darkness and in sin cannot be love. God is love and anything done in the name of love must bring glory to God.
The second thing about love is that; it is a commitment. This is why it endures all kinds of things without weakening. This also means love is a conviction and it has stick-ability. All these so called ‘falling in love’ one moment and falling out of love the next moment are not true love. Love is not fickle minded.

Lastly, true love gives, it gives sacrificially. In this age of self –centred living, what is most needed is this dimension of love, the sacrificial dimension, where you can sacrifice for the purpose of love. If we will have more of this, there would be less divorces and less of broken hearts in our society.
Do I believe in this celebration? Of course I do. True love should be celebrated and demonstrated for the world to see. It is still the most powerful weapon and the most attractive tool. “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciple , if ye have love one to another.” John 13:35
HAPPY VALENTINE! HAPPY CELEBRATION OF LOVE
